Barefoot College International‘s Solar Program in Senegal is featured in the ARTE full-length documentary, The Light of Women (La Lumière Des Femmes in French). It is nominated for the FIPADOC film festival competition in the Impact category 🙌 . Additional nominations for the film have also been made internationally.

The Light of Women by ARTE Showcases Senegalese Solar Mamas
The artistic eyes of filmmakers Elise Darblay et Antoine Depeyre managed the creation of this stunning, inspiring film that depicts the transformative journey of the Solar Mamas in Senegal. Our team sends a huge thank you to ARTE for featuring the story of our solar program in such unique and heretofore untold ways, including the many challenges that women face when yearning to gain knowledge, education and agency.

IN THE PEUL KINGDOM OF FOUTA-TORO, BETWEEN SENEGAL AND MAURITANIA, ISOLATED VILLAGES SUBSIST WITHOUT ELECTRICITY AND ARE TOTALLY OFF-GRID. AN NGO IS TRAINING WOMEN TO USE SOLAR ENERGY, BUT THEY HAVE TO BE ALLOWED TO GO TO TOWN FOR LONG WEEKS AT A TIME. THE MEN RESIST. BUT LED BY NÉNÉ, IN HER FIFTIES, A DOZEN WIVES DEFY THE BAN. BY TAKING THEIR DESTINY INTO THEIR OWN HANDS, THEY ARE ALSO CHANGING THE FATE OF THE VILLAGE.
